The fictional creation of writer and illustrator Capt WE Johns, dashing Royal Flying Corps pilot Major James Bigglesworth (Biggles) has appeared in more than 100 books which have been read in 40-plus countries and which have excited and inspired generations of boys across the world. Biggles, with his pals Ginger Lacey, Lord Bertie Lissie and Ginger Hebblethwaite, began life as a World War I flying ace, enlisting as a 16-year-old having conveniently 'lost' his birth certificate. He downed countless German triplane fighters before breakfast and later became a charter pilot, solving crimes and defeating evil plots in dense jungles, boiling deserts and snowy wastes. Losing none of his youthful panache and still dressed in his dashing flying jacket he would later tackle the best of the Nazi pilots in a series of World War Two adventures. It is thought Biggles creator WE Johns based many of his hero's adventures on a real life hero, English rugby star Cyril Lowe. The Blackheath player had been a fighter ace in World War I, claiming nine 'kills'. The August 1918 citation for Lowe's DFC read, 'This officer has destroyed five enemy machines and driven down two others out of control. Siemens Wk6142 Instruction Manual.
